holiday gift guide 2020

this holiday season it is more important than ever to support local, small brands especially Black-owned brands. the pandemic has not been easy for anyone, least of all small business owners and creatives. gift your friends and family with a little joy + a small business owner at the exact same time. i’m proud to be a midwestern gal and am invested in our future here so all of these small businesses are also midwest based. our money is our vote.

here are some good ones to gift to your loved ones, add to your list (or buy for yourself because let’s be honest, that’s half the fun):

Black owned businesses denoted by an asterisk.

ruhling woven

ruhling woven is a pittsburgh based curator of vintage, beautiful things + she makes lovely jewelry! my favorite ying yang pearl necklace is from her and i only wish i lived closer so i could buy every lamp she finds. check out her insta to see her latest stock!

splendor revival*

splendor revival is one of my favorites of all time, katya offers reworked vintage, curated home goods, art prints, candles, all the good stuff in the world. she also has a monthly subscription box service that would be a dream of a gift! you can find her booth at the little light collective, the home for a bunch of women owned brands in columbus.

the tart peach

my lovely friend jordan makes clean nail polishes, lipsticks, cheek stains, highlights and more. even my mom is obsessed. i love her funky colors and commitment to ethical and sustainable production. add to cart!

it wouldn’t be a post from me without mentioning dabl, the brainchild of my gorgeous little dimi. she is the queen of thrift & redone fashion finds and now offers sustainably sourced basics as well! the perfect home for the fashion luvr on your list, she also offers gift cards for your pickier teenage cousin.

lolly lolly ceramics*

i have been lusting after the lolly lolly ceramics mugs ever since her 100 day challenge and now lolly lolly is making it BIG time! her work was recently featured on madewell’s site and she’ll be relaunching with new drops very, very soon. be sure to get on her email list so you know the second they go live because i promise, they’re gonna go fast.

comune restaurant

comune is my favorite restaurant in columbus and supporting them is important af if we want them to make it through the pandemic. they’ve been doing this beautiful thing where they offer a meal to eat at home. i’ve done it twice and it is well worth the price of admission. get yourself a bottle of natural wine while you’re there.

moco candles

moco candles is an indianapolis-based small batch, eco-friendly 100% soy candle company. you can even send back your used up candle jars to be reused! + you can use my code ‘OLIVIA942’ for 20% off!

nuri is a small brand owned by my friend brooke. she curates gorgeous little high quality jewelry pieces with new drops every season. as she says “someone has to supply the family heirlooms.”

potion matcha

if you haven’t tried the blueberry matcha from potion matcha, you haven’t truly lived. chloe offers quality, ethically sourced and beautiful matcha products. a perfect stocking stuffer or gift for your friend who is always trying to quit drinking coffee.

house of foster*

i want one of each of these gorgeous fragrances and candles from house of foster. luxe, nuanced scents that are beautiful ambiguous and ungendered. resin is on my list this year, ahem. 😉

piecework puzzles

during the pandemic, i’ve been obsessed with doing puzzles instead of endangering the public at bars and these are my absolute favorites. piecework is an indianapolis based small brand with designs to die for, you may have even seen them in vogue!

prologue bookshop

prologue is a columbus based independent bookstore that has a special place in my heart, pre-pandemic i used to host my book club there. books are my favorite gift to give and to get. prologue has been hit hard by the pandemic as you can imagine so if you are thinking of picking up a book for someone on your list, check out their site or any independently owned bookstore! they need our support now more than ever.

this is not an exhaustive list, there are so many incredible little brands that i missed! lmk who i’m missing because trust and believe i want more, more, more. all my love this strange, lovely and difficult holiday season. take care of yourself and drink some eggnog for me. i love you.
